You may have heard about the Old Ladies Against Underwater Garbage (OLAUG) which is very active in cleaning up Cape Cod ponds from Falmouth to Chatham. Since 2017, this energetic group of women aged 64 and above travel to various ponds and work in teams to haul garbage from beneath the surface, leaving these ponds cleaner than before their visit. On Saturday, September 14, OLAUG came to Long Pond for a morning clean up and were supported by the BPC. BPC volunteers assisted by providing kayaks for holding the trash the divers brought to the surface, as well as supplying much needed refreshments for the OLAUG team.
The OLAUG team members remarked that Long Pond was one of the cleanest ponds they have seen which is a testament to the good behavior of those that frequent it. Nonetheless, with the BPC’s assistance, about 30 pounds of garbage was collected. Take a look at the photos below that show the team, led by Susan Bauer (far right in bottom left photo), and what was collected. The BPC plans to work with OLAUG again next year at a different pond in Brewster. For more information on OLAUG and to view recent video clips featured on major news networks, visit its website. The Citizen Science Program, now in its 8th year, is testing 20 Brewster ponds for cyanobacteria bi-weekly from May through October. Fifty-three volunteers divided into teams of two to three people grab water samples every other Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday morning. Posted here are the most recent test results. This chart will be updated bi-monthly until the end of our testing cycle in October. A year-end report of the season will be available in January 2025. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Marty Burke via email: [email protected] Pictured above (left to right) are Citizen Science volunteers Rob Boas and Larry Chappel during their pond sampling.
Join the BPC and business partner Terra Firma Permagardens for "Meadowscaping: Building a Healthy Lawn for Pollinators, Pets, and People." This "learn by doing" event will be held on Saturday, October 12 from 10:00 - 11:30 AM at Terra Firma Permagardens (155 Monument Road, Orleans). The session will be led by Peter Jensen, who will describe native planting strategies for hugel terraces. Participants will assist with applying leaf compost on the lawn and terrace. There will be ample time for questions and discussion.
Bring along work or gardening gloves and dress accordingly for being outdoors; this event will be held rain or shine. Spaces will fill quickly as this unique event is limited to 20 participants. Participants are welcome to arrive from 9:30 AM onward and also stay afterward for a quick tour of the rain gardens and learn about runoff mitigation techniques. The Brewster Conservation Trust is having two sessions of its "Seed Collecting Workshop." Both will be held on Tuesday, September 17 at its Eddy Sisters Property (660 Lower Road).
