You may have heard about the Old Ladies Against Underwater Garbage (OLAUG) which is very active in cleaning up Cape Cod ponds from Falmouth to Chatham. Since 2017, this energetic group of women aged 64 and above travel to various ponds and work in teams to haul garbage from beneath the surface, leaving these ponds cleaner than before their visit. On Saturday, September 14, OLAUG came to Long Pond for a morning clean up and were supported by the BPC. BPC volunteers assisted by providing kayaks for holding the trash the divers brought to the surface, as well as supplying much needed refreshments for the OLAUG team.
The OLAUG team members remarked that Long Pond was one of the cleanest ponds they have seen which is a testament to the good behavior of those that frequent it. Nonetheless, with the BPC’s assistance, about 30 pounds of garbage was collected. Take a look at the photos below that show the team, led by Susan Bauer (far right in bottom left photo), and what was collected. The BPC plans to work with OLAUG again next year at a different pond in Brewster. For more information on OLAUG and to view recent video clips featured on major news networks, visit its website.
