Blueberry Pond
Brewster is graced with more pond acreage than any town on Cape Cod and is home to 80 ponds ranging in size from less than .1 acres to 730 acres. Classic "Kettle Ponds," which formed when the glaciers retreated at the end of the last ice age, they host a diverse species of wildlife. Many are accessible for swimming, fishing, and kayaking.

Now, however, a large and growing number are facing negative impacts from bacterial contamination, excessive nutrients, invasive species, and the impacts of human development. Sadly, too many of our ponds are threatened by poor water quality.
The Brewster Ponds Coalition serves to educate, advocate, and help secure funding on behalf of Brewster's ponds. Through written materials, presentations, this website, and other sources, The Brewster Ponds Coalition educates about the causes and types of pond health deterioration, reviews pond studies with property owners, and teaches ways we can all help both protect and restore our ponds. The Brewster Ponds Coalition also advocates for responsible regulations and policies to protect ponds, working with the Town, environmental organizations, and citizens or neighborhood groups. The BPC seeks to facilitate pond studies and restoration work. We hope you will join us — together we can keep Brewster's ponds healthy, safe and beautiful. |
