Brewster Ponds Coalition Ponds Summit event
Brewster’s more than 2100 acres of kettle ponds are a unique resource rich in aquatic life. Many contain rare and endangered species found in few other places on earth. They also have incredible recreational and economic value.

Many of Brewster’s kettle ponds have no inflows or outflows. As a result, these “closed systems” are very sensitive to human and climate impacts.
While we think of these beautiful ponds as “pristine,” few actually are.  Humans have for eons manipulated ponds for various agricultural, developmental and recreational reasons and Brewster’s ponds are no exception.

Pond "reclamation" sometimes involved adding lime to waters or killing native fish species in favor of stocking non-native trout
Today, we know that pond water quality and pond health are impacted in a variety of ways and that solutions are
more complex than originally thought.  A number of practices that were considered to be commonplace or established just a few decades ago, are no longer in use or have actually proven to be detrimental.

Join us in this discovery process as we search for ways that everyone can play a role in improving the conditions of Brewster’s Ponds.
