Adult Education Programs

Community education has been a hallmark of every BPC activity and program since our founding in 2014.
One of the primary goals of the Brewster Ponds Coalition is to provide ongoing programs that educate residents about the importance of protecting our water resources and strive to instill a willingness among residents to take their own measures to help protect Brewster’s delicate ecosystem within Cape Cod.

Our adult education programs focus on the three main sources of water pollution: septic systems, fertilizer, and stormwater runoff.

With continued adult education programs, the BPC works to increase awareness among residents and show how some simple measures can have a big impact on the health of our beautiful ponds.

The BPC partners with not only local organizations, but also environmental groups on the state level. As such, the community is able to receive information from other entities that share the same mission as the BPC.

Some of our past adult education programs have included:
Presentations by the Superintendent of the Town of Brewster Water Department about the quality of Brewster’s drinking water and how to protect it in the face of current and future challenges, and by the Director of the Brewster Board of Health about wastewater.

Native plant and alternative lawn workshops held at a local nursery that focus on using native plants and alternative lawn covers to preserve our ecosystem.

Workshops on how to create a “Cape friendly” landscape led by a representative of the Association to Preserve Cape Cod (APCC).

Hands-on “Weed Watcher” workshops about how to identify aquatic invasive plants, held in conjunction with representatives from the MA Department of Conservation and Recreation Lakes and Ponds Program.

Each year, the BPC holds its Pond Summit and Annual Meeting that further provide opportunities to educate the public on what BPC is doing to further its mission “to protect and improve the health of Brewster’s ponds through science, education, and advocacy.”

Past meetings have included presentations by the director of the MASSTC (the Massachusetts Alternative Septic System Test Center) and the Executive Director of the Barnstable Clean Water Coalition.

The BPC continues to provide programs that educate residents and visitors on topics that promote clean water advocacy in the Brewster community. We hope our programs instill not only knowledge to the community, but also a willingness to join our mission and support our efforts.
