The Orleans Pond Coalition

Saturday, November 19.  10:00 AM
1 1/2 to 2 hours

Brewster and Orleans share ownership of Baker's Pond; both towns have preserved conservation land abutting the pond. Divided equally down the middle between Orleans and Brewster, Bakers Pond has the distinction of being one of the least impaired ponds on Cape Cod. However, there are indications of declining health.

Walk from Orleans Conservation land, by one edge of the Orleans side of the pond ----through wooded trails, along a seldom used bumpy road, by a protected white cedar swamp, and through a small residential neighborhood to reach the more remote Brewster side of the pond.

From the Brewster trails, view  an abutting wetland area.  Walk through a stand of bamboo, by a semi circle of boulders, and an area where daffodils still grow in the spring - all evidence of a home at the site in the past.

Learn how to observe a pond from a distance and up close to begin to assess its status. Is it healthy? Are there signs that it is beginning to be impaired? Discover things that we can do to help protect ponds and or help improve them - even if they are already showing signs of impairment.

Advance Registration required. Limit 35 walkers. Free to contributing members of the Brewster Ponds Coalition and the Orleans Pond Coalition.

Registration deadline Wednesday, November 16, 2016.

Weather: Heavy rain cancels walk; Light rain or mist---we will be there; wear rain gear! Serious rain postpones and walk will be rescheduled at a future date.

Walking conditions: Wooded, dirt trails, some quite rough with stones and roots. Some significant inclines. Could be challenging for casual walkers not used to rough trails. Wear comfortable shoes.
